Is Plastic Surgery Worth the Hassle?

Plastic surgery has been an ongoing thing for quite a number of years. With shows like Nip-Tuck, extreme makeovers, and the like, we have always known what this line of medicine was all about. But lately, it is like someone just let Nigerians know, that they can enhance their bodies. The craze about plastic surgery has become an epidemic. One Nigerian actress put on her social media one day: Dress by: designer, Shoes by: designer, Makeup by: make-up artist, Body by: Plastic surgeon. You now have to give credit to the doctors who enhanced your body; so many more can patronize them.

Girls go on trips and come back with bigger butts and smaller waists. Some lose weight drastically. Some all of a sudden start taking pictures that accentuates the great work of their doctors. Now people do giveaways online, and some of the gifts include a free consultation at a plastic surgeon’s office or free liposuction. Does this have to do with a lack of self-love? Or do people want to cover an insecurity of some sort, or gain attention from men?

This issue has become more prevalent with the rise of social media. People are now critical of other people’s bodies because they have direct access to them online. New mothers are under immense pressure by other moms who still have their 6-pack, two days after they gave birth. Did anyone see Meghan Markle’s stomach after she had her baby? She still looked pregnant, and that is completely normal. Some new moms have cosmetic surgeries done, but yet they attribute their success to living an active lifestyle, and dropping the baby weight almost immediately, with a picture captioned with #5weeksPostPartum.

I was listening to a conversation one day, where some ladies were addressing this issue, and someone thought, that girls with no curves, don’t get the perks that girls with curves do, so that’s why people do all these surgeries. Which is sad; everything stems from a lack of self-love and self-confidence. If you know who you are, who God created you to be, it doesn’t matter if you are short, fat, tall, slim, no hips, hips, no boobs, boobs, you will still live your life to the fullest, you will still get married to the guy of your dreams.

It doesn’t have anything to do with your looks, what is for you, is for you. Your child wouldn’t care if you were looking sexy or not, because the love they have for you runs deeper than that. So do your parents, siblings, true friends, and spouse (this is not a cue for you to let yourself go, but pause and think about it). You were fearfully and wonderfully made by the best creator that there will ever be.

People get addicted to these surgeries; all of a sudden, your boobs are not big enough, your nose is not pointy enough, your waist isn’t small enough, and I ask the question; to what end? Every time you go under the knife is a risk. I heard of the story of the Nigerian girl who died on the operating table, during an enhancement surgery just a few months ago. Now the doctor is on the run, leaving the family without their loved one.

Not to talk of the people who have lost their lives, in places like Brazil or the Caribbean islands, all due to failed cosmetic surgery attempts. American Reality Star, K. Michelle, revealed that she had complications after she had her fat transferred to her butt. She couldn’t sit down, and she had other issues and ended up taking it out.

I believe people are trying to fill a void when they undergo certain types of cosmetic surgeries. Is it God’s will for us modify our bodies with surgeries? I honestly cannot answer that question explicitly. But if you are going to risk your life for it, due to unforeseen complications, for a surgery that isn’t a life a death situation, then I don’t think it’s worth it. Do what you can do with exercise and focus on other aspects of your life that make you truly beautiful. Surgery cannot fix your character; surgery cannot buy you, love, surgery cannot eradicate loneliness.

Our lives are not limited by what we look like; we have a purpose, we have a calling, we have people who love us regardless of what we look like, we have a God, who absolutely adores us, and would do anything for us. I believe God creates us in different ways, just to prove the point that there is more to us than what we look like. Dear people, if you really must have these types of surgeries, do extensive research, before you risk your life. But do I think it’s worth it? No, I don’t, there is more to life than our physical appearances.
