Hands & Feet of Jesus

It is more blessed to give than to receive—Jesus

What does it mean to be the hands and feet of Jesus? Before Jesus left the earth, He promised His disciples that He would send another helper, who is the Holy Spirit that would teach us all truth, and will guide us while we are still on this planet. The disciples where sorrowful, they did not want Jesus to leave. If I were with them, I wouldn't want him to go as well. With Jesus being physically present with them, all was well. They did not face any persecution, no one stoned them, they were eating and drinking and enjoying his company until it was time for him to leave, then reality set in.

You see, Jesus was only one person; He could not be at multiple places at the same time. He was spread so thin, while He was here. Everyone wanted a piece of Him, whether it was for good or bad. Someone once put it this way—if you think these modern day celebrities have it bad with the paparazzi and the fans, you need to read about Jesus. There were times He couldn't go to certain places. The bible described the number of people who were after him, as multitudes. He often had to retreat, and reconnect with God. There was even a point where He said; “if I don't leave, these people will make me a king.” So he figured it was better for him to go, and then send down the Holy Spirit, who will now dwell in bodies of the believers, and instruct them on how to navigate this life.

Hands and Feet

Since we now have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, we as Christians have been commissioned by God to spread the gospel, make disciples of all men, and help the poor & needy. The way things were done in the old, is definitely not the way things are happening now, under the new covenant. In the Old Testament, food fell from heaven, animals brought meat for people, and water gushed out of rocks, to give people drink (I think that still happens). But now the way God relates with us is different. God has mobilized the believer to go out there and be responsible, because He has gifted us with the Holy Spirit. Things no longer miraculously appear at our doorsteps, we have to go out there and do the work. (I should know this: I waited for years for my blue passport to appear in my mailbox and it never did. ha-ha)

I have had countless conversations with people, who question God and His abilities. They are of the opinion that if God is all the bible portrays Him to be, then why is there poverty? Why are people suffering? Although I may not be able to answer that explicitly, I know that there is a contingency plan set in place, for these people to be catered for, only if we as Christians answer that call. I am reminded of a story in the bible, where a rich young ruler came to Jesus, to ask what he should do to gain eternal life (see Matthew 19:16-26) Jesus listed a part of the ten commandments, that he had to obey, to access this life. He told Jesus that he had done all that.

Then Jesus told him to sell all his possessions, and give the proceeds to the poor, and then follow Him. He walked away from their conversation in despair because he knew he had a lot and was not ready to sacrifice that for those who didn't have anything. Jesus was not calling him to a life of lack, and sorrow, but was calling him to something bigger than himself.

Now there are a lot of people who God has called to go literally be his hands and feet, to people who are suffering. Maybe God has called people to start an organization to stop sex trafficking, abortion or slavery, or to educate and empower kids, who don’t have access to education, and no one is answering.

People are occupied with their own lives, and goals. Do we expect Him to come down and do it Himself, when He has given us the resources to do so? No. He isn’t going to do that. He has sent people to go on His behalf; He has put His Spirit in us, to carry out His agenda. Imagine if doctors didn't answer the call to be in the medical field, we would all suffer for it, it's the same thing. I believe that is a part of the reason why there is suffering because people are not listening to God.

To those who complain about the suffering and poverty, you are the answer. Step out and do something, and bring others alongside you. When you begin to move, others will join you, and the people you help will give glory to God. I saw a video on social media one day, about two comedians, who noticed a woman paying for gas with pennies, and decided to give her some cash.

The woman broke down saying, she had just lost her husband and things have been tough for her and her family. She went ahead to say, people usually say God is watching; now she can see that He really is. When we step out and help others, when we notice something and do something about it, hope is reignited in humanity, and people believe and trust in God again, they know that they are not abandoned by Him.

“Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God." 2 Corinthians 9:11

If you study the Bible, you can find out that God has a heart for people, which makes a lot of sense, because God is love. He wants us to take care of the widows, the orphans and those who can’t fend for themselves. That is why He said in Matthew 25:31-40, after talking about how we should give the poor food, clothe them, visit the sick and those in prison, He ended it with saying— ‘Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’ So we know this is something that is near and dear to His heart.

Imagine for a second, if all the believers, who are capable, rise up and take care of those in need, wouldn’t the world be a better place? Those who don’t believe God would be the first to say—Even if I don’t believe God, I can’t argue with the work the Christians are doing.

I will conclude with what US former president, Bill Clinton said about a speech Mother Teresa gave.

She was asked to address the officials at a breakfast meeting in the white house, in 1994. During such meetings, people don't usually speak on controversial issues. But that day Mother Teresa, spoke from the heart, on the subject of abortion (you can check out her speech here). When a reporter asked then President, Bill Clinton what he thought about what she said, he replied: "How can anyone argue with a life, so well-lived?"

Our lives must be reflective of the message we carry. And may we be the people, God has called us to be. Hope you enjoyed this inspirational article that has been on my heart for weeks to write. I pray it mobilizes us, to do what God has called us to do. Remember to share, like, comment, and subscribe never to miss an update.
