Wisdom Weekly: There is no Such Thing as Your Truth

May 21, 2019

Have you heard this phrase thrown around lately; my truth or your truth? Whenever there is a new buzzword or buzz phrase, as we would refer to this one as, so many people are quick to catch on to the latest lingo, because of social media, and because they want to feel among, as we say in this part of the world. Lord knows that this phrase has irked me so badly, that I had to write an article about it. Because people are getting deceived by all these new things that keep flying around. Let me be the first to tell you, just in case you do not know, that—there is no such thing as your truth (or my truth). There is either the truth or a lie. There is no in between.

I remember when the Jussie Smollet case just broke, and everyone stood by him, and were applauding him for speaking his truth, not the truth, but his own version of the story of what he claimed happened. Later it came out that it was all planned by him, and then the case got dropped miraculously. Although Jussie still maintains his innocence, the general public still doesn’t know if he was lying about the attack or not.

This my truth vs. the truth thing is just an avenue for people to do whatever feels right to them, even if it is wrong. As long as they believe it’s the right way, then it’s their truth. As the world keeps unfolding, everyone wants to be their own god. They no longer need a supreme being, who dictates what is right and wrong. That feels too restrictive and boring; little do they know that it is what they actually need.

Rules are there to protect you, and not harm you. The traffic light shows red, which indicates that all cars should come to a halt, to give way to other vehicles or pedestrians. But if you are impatient, or your own version of red is now green, then you opt to forge ahead, as Nigerians in Lagos do (Lord help me road rage), and most times end up in an accident. The red light was not meant to restrict you, but to control traffic, and in the process protect you.

Same with God, who is the determiner of what is right and wrong, and what is true and a lie.

His rules, regulations, and boundaries are there to protect you. John 8:32 says  —“and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The Bible says—the truth. Not my truth, or your truth, or what we perceive to be true. The enemy uses all these new concepts to deceive people; he is trying to deviate mankind from what the reality of things are. We can’t all decide for ourselves, what is right or wrong; God has already done that. It is now up to us to accept it or not. And if we reject the truth, there is no point sugar coating the lie we have accepted, as my truth or your truth. It is either an event happened, or it didn’t, as the case of Jussie, it’s either he was attacked by those men, or not. There are no two ways about it.

So let’s not be deceived any longer, let us renew our minds, as Romans 2:2 says, and not be conformed to the patterns of this world, because it will only lead us astray.
