So you want to get married...

November 28, 2019

I was watching a vlog the other day, and the couple I was watching talked about reasons why people shouldn’t get married. Then they went ahead to share a story about a lady who was about to get married and when asked what she looked forward to the most in marriage, she said she couldn’t wait for her wedding to be on one of Africa’s top wedding website because she was ready to pepper them!

I mean that was her expectation and I hope she got what she wanted, but marriage is way more than the glamorous event which only takes a number of hours and is over before you know it.

What is the purpose of marriage?

In the beginning God told Adam and Eve to multiply and fill the earth and also have dominion over everything that was in it (Genesis 1:28). There was a purpose for Adam and Eve coming together. It was not because Adam was lonely and Eve was tired of always being the bridesmaid and never the bride; God had a specific assignment for the two of them coming together.

I don’t think much has changed since creation; God still has specific assignments for couples that He decides to bring together. He wants to use you and your partner to accomplish great things for His Kingdom. Marriage is about purpose, it is about building a legacy that will outlast generations. It is about raising godly sons and daughters, who will carry on with the work you already began.

I am reminded of the relationship God had with David and Solomon, both men were passionate about building God’s temple. God assigned David to provide the materials for the temple, while Solomon was commiserated to oversee the building project after David passed away.

Your marriage is not just about you and your spouse and the love you have, but is also about what the children you bring into this world will do after you are long gone. So it is wise that you choose well or better still, let God do the choosing.

When I think about marriage, I think about purpose; what me and my spouse will accomplish together. I think about children; the lovely arrows that God has already set apart to accomplish great things for His kingdom. I think about legacy; what would we leave behind for generations to come? I think about the body of Christ; how we would be of service to God.

I think about having a best friend, hopefully for life; it is a joyful thing to always have someone in your corner who will cheer you on and encourage you to do the things you might be afraid to do. I think about Netflix and chilling! Yassss! Because it has been a long time! You know these days, as a Chide of God (Child of God) you can’t be letting members of the opposite sex cuddle up next to you in bed, while watching your favorite movies or television shows when you haven’t said your I dos!

I am also not ignorant of the fact that tough times will present themselves; there will be times when your relationships might be tested beyond your capacity to bear with the circumstance, that is when you remember why you got together to begin with. And it will be difficult to break apart, if you have a vision attached to your union.

That is why you shouldn’t just join your life with anybody; marriage is way beyond just two people seemingly in love and deciding to tie the knot; it’s deeper than that. Don’t get me wrong I also look forward to celebrating God’s love on that day with friends and family, I love a good reason for family and close friends coming together and partying (good partying that is) like its 1999!

But we shouldn’t lose the essence of what marriage really is. Take your time to prepare well because if done properly, you just might be stuck with that person for the rest of your life!
