Gatekeeper

Updated: Apr 7, 2020

In my time of prayer one day, the word gatekeeper, popped up in my spirit. I started praying about it from the standpoint of God being our gatekeeper. If He assumed that position, then He wouldn’t let any situation that is not good for us, come into our lives. A Gatekeeper is someone who has the responsibility of letting people in and out of a facility. It could be a home, a company, some restricted areas, and the list is endless. Today we are going to talk about being the gatekeeper for your life. Let’s Talk!

In the Bible, kings and rulers appointed people with the responsibility of guarding a city or temple. These people had to be trustworthy people because they had to discern between the people they let in and out of a city. And also because what they guarded was so precious, those who appointed them, needed to know that they weren’t going to steal the treasuries of God’s house, or let an enemy into the city. 1 Chronicles 9:17-27 recounts the time when people were appointed as gatekeepers, to protect the city and God’s temple. It was such a huge responsibility that it was given to the Levites, who were also the Lord’s chosen ones for the priesthood.

As believers, we have been called to be gatekeepers of our own lives. We are God’s masterpiece, we are treasures in the sight of God, and as such, we ought to carry ourselves with confidence, knowing who we are in Christ. Because of this divine position God has given us, we cannot let anything creep into our lives. Be it thoughts, people, sickness, and whatever the case may be, we have to evaluate each situation and must decide if it is a good fit for us, according to the word of God.

No one would let a thief, waltz into their home, as long as they can stop that thief. That thief may not make it back home alive. We should learn to stop things dead in their tracks before they infiltrate our lives. For example, as a Christian man or woman who is single, and you know the person who approached you, or who is trying to get your attention isn’t a believer, even if some might claim they are believers, but their lives are not reflective of the word of God. So why do you keep entertaining them? Why do you let them into your space, knowing fully well what the bible says about not being unequally yoked? Being involved with people, who have red flags written all over them, will only lead to a lifetime of sorrow.

There are many people in marriages, who regret walking down the aisle to their significant other. That doesn’t have to be your story; you can prevent that from happening, as the gatekeeper of your life. Even with friendships, when you meet certain people, who exhibit signs of toxicity, you have no business, opening up your life to them. I love this passage of scripture in Proverbs, which says we should guard our hearts above all else because out of it, flows the issues of life. The bible says above all else, which means it is very important for us to be gatekeepers.

How then Can we be Good Gatekeepers of Our Lives?

By studying the word of God, spending time in prayer, and utilizing the gift that is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is always there to direct you; He alerts you when something is off, even if you can’t place your finger on it. He gives you the go-ahead, and lets you know when to take several seats. He is basically there to guide you. If you ignore the Holy Spirit, you then stifle His voice, and He will no longer speak to you or navigate your life. This can be likened to a GPS on our mobile phones. Sometimes, I am just sick of hearing her voice; then I mute her. The navigation system might still be running, but because I muted her, I can no longer hear her directions.

You cannot be a good gatekeeper, without spending time in God’s presence. Because that is where you will receive divine instructions for your life, at the feet of the Father, instructions like: Take that job, don’t sign that deal, marry that man, don’t talk to that guy, don’t eat that, eat that, don’t apply to that job, don’t make that trip, be friends with that girl, don’t spend that amount of money.

You see when you sit at the feet of Jesus daily, He is more than happy to direct you and teach you. He gives you skills that you can’t find anywhere else. Sometimes the decision you make, others may not understand it, but deep in your heart, you know it was the best decision for you. When you spend time in prayer, God begins to reveal things to you, and you become more sensitive to the holy spirit.

So we have to be fierce, trustworthy, and responsible, to be good gatekeepers. A good gatekeeper, makes decisions, based on the best interest, of the people, or situation they are guarding. Just like any border patrol officer, who wants to protect their land, we have to become that for our own lives. Jesus paid such a high price, for us to just let whatever wants to come into our lives, a free entry. We must evaluate it first, to see if it is according to the will of God for our lives.
